Is Anesthesia Safe?

Anesthetics and anesthesia techniques are inherently dangerous because they have the potential to cause death or serious permanent injury. Nevertheless, in the last decade, deaths due to anesthesia have decreased 25-fold, from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 250,000.  In just over 40 years anesthesiologists have developed drugs, procedures and sophisticated monitors to improve the safety of the surgical patient.
